Dr. Simon Hume
Dr Simon Hume is a consultant gastroenterologist and hepatologist with a sub-speciality interest in liver disease. Dr Hume is currently completing a PhD with the University of Melbourne at St Vincent’s Hospital and has been awarded an Australian Government Research Training Program Scholarship. The focus of his PhD involves a clinical trial evaluating strategies to cure hepatitis B. In addition to his clinical work at St Vincent’s Hospital and Austin Hospital, Dr Hume is a clinical skills tutor and examiner with the Melbourne Medical School.
Dr Hume studied a Bachelor of Medicine / Bachelor of Surgery at Deakin University where he graduated as dux of the clinical school. He was awarded the E.H. Embley Australian Medical Association Prize and was a John Flynn Placement Program Scholar. Prior to medicine, Simon completed a dual Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Commerce degrees with majors in Psychology, Japanese Language and Finance. He was awarded the Sakata Scholarship and Dean’s Award for excellence in Japanese language.
Dr Hume completed his basic physician training at St Vincent’s Hospital and was the President of the Resident Medical Officer Society in 2020. He subsequently undertook advanced training in gastroenterology at St Vincent’s Hospital as well as the Liver Transplant Unit at Austin Health.
Dr Hume is focused on delivering person-centred care and places great importance on clear communication. He welcomes referrals in all areas of gastroenterology including endoscopy (gastroscopy and colonoscopy), irritable bowel syndrome, liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease and iron deficiency.
Outside of work Dr Hume enjoys tennis, scuba diving, travel and food.
