Assoc. Professor Marcus Robertson
Assoc. Professor Marcus Robertson is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist with special interests in liver diseases and liver transplantation and is the Director of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Services at Peninsula Health.
Marcus was born and raised on the Mornington Peninsula. He graduated from Monash University in 2006 as Dux of the entire medical course and received a number of prestigious awards including the Australian Medical Association Prize and the Royal Australasian College of Physicians Prize in Clinical Medicine for being the top Victorian medical graduate. Throughout this time, Marcus also trained as a competitive swimmer and represented Australia at the highest level. Marcus undertook his specialist Gastroenterology training at Monash Medical Centre and the Austin Hospital, Melbourne. During this time, he received a number of awards including: the Monash University Distinguished Teacher of the Year for outstanding teaching of medical students; the Orgnanon prize for Australian Registrar Research; and the Monash Health Prize for clinical excellence – an award for excellence in clinical medical practice, service delivery, teaching and organizational contribution.
Subsequent to this, Marcus moved to Scotland for subspeciality training and undertook a Hepatology and Liver Transplant Fellowship at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. During this time he wrote a number of book chapters for medical textbooks, including the prestigious Oxford Textbook of Medicine. Marcus also completed a PhD on the topic of “Clinical risk stratification in patients with advanced liver disease and portal hypertension”. He has published multiple research articles in the fields of liver transplantation, endoscopy, gastrointestinal bleeding, FibroScan and liver conditions such as hepato-renal syndrome and is currently running several clinical trials. In 2014, he was nominated for the Young Investigator of the Year award for research he presented to the Australian Gastroenterology Week conference. He also received a President’s award for research submitted to the American Academy for the Study of Liver Diseases for his research relating to Hepatitis B.
Prior to becoming the Director at Peninsula Health, Marcus worked as a Gastroenterologist and physician at Monash Health, where he was the Clinical Dean of undergraduate medicine at Dandenong Hospital, a regional head examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Physicians specialist examination, the joint Director of Medicine at Dandenong Hospital and a senior clinical lecturer through Monash University. Marcus also led the FibroScan services at Monash Health.
Assoc. Professor Marcus Robertson has a specialty interest in liver diseases, hepatitis and cirrhosis. He also maintains a broad range of interests in all areas of gastroenterology including irritable bowel syndrome, endoscopy (gastroscopy and colonoscopy) and inflammatory bowel disease.
